Course information
In the Arabic level 8 course you will take your language skills to a high degree of proficiency. After this course you will, among other things, be able to:
- speak and write Arabic with confidence
- have conversations about tourism and the environment
- recognise 150 new Arabic words
Arabic level 8 is the perfect course for you if you can already speak Arabic reasonably well. For example, you can already read short texts (with the aid of a vocabulary list), watch the news in Arabic and tell something about the history of a place. You are also familiar with various grammatical concepts, such as ‘Kaana and her sisters’ (to be, become, is not, etc.) and the passive voice.
The course is taught in Arabic and Dutch or English, depending on the languages of the participants.

Intake
The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation.
After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.
If you have completed the Arabic level 7 course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.
Course content
Just like Arabic level 7, this course focuses on putting your knowledge of Arabic into practice. This means a lot of reading, writing, listening and speaking during the lessons. The course textbook will help you with this, as it is all written in Arabic. Of course you will also learn new words and grammar. And, just like in all our Arabic courses, you will learn more about Arabic culture.
During this course you will improve your Modern Standard Arabic using the topics nature, the environment, travel and tourism. You will put yourself into the shoes of a volunteer by reading articles about air pollution and endangered species, by writing emails asking people to join in a volunteer project and by discussing sustainability with your fellow students.
In the context of travel, once you have completed Arabic level 8, you will be able to do more than write a postcard. Among other things, you will write a summary about a trip you have taken, you will read texts about tourism in Egypt and Lebanon, and talk about cities and tourist attractions.
The grammar you learn during this course includes:
- use of the accusative with such participles as 'anna and lākinna
- conditional sentences, for example in إذا جئت غدًا (“If you come tomorrow.”)
- the subjunctive with participles such as 'an and likay
Certificate
You will complete the course with an oral and written exam. If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained.
Course material
The course material is not included in the course price. If you choose to follow lessons in class, you can buy your books through us. You then receive them during the first lesson. If you are going to take an online course, you will buy the books yourself.

What is included in the price of a group course?
The course price includes:
- an intake
- the group course
- an exam
- (if necessary) a resit. You can take the resit within six months after finishing the course.
- a certificate
The course material is not included in the course price.
What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
