Course information
The course Dutch Intermediate 1 is intended for students who are, for example, already able to ask for directions and understand the answer, provided the other person is speaking slowly and clearly. They are aksi able to use er in the correct place in a sentence, recognise a continuous situation, such as in Ze is in de rivier aan het zwemmen, and ask for help or advice.
Upon completing the Dutch Intermediate 1 course, you will have a thorough knowledge of basic Dutch. After this course you will, among other things, be able to:
- understand information on everyday topics, such as school, work and leisure time
- recognise the main points in newspaper articles on familiar topics
- express your opinion on various topics
You will need a minimum level of B1 of the English language in order to follow this course, because some explanations will be given in English.
Course schedule and prices
Intake
The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation.
After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.
If you have completed the Dutch Beginners 2 course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.
Course content
During this course, you will improve your Dutch listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Grammar and vocabulary are an important part of the course, and a lot of attention is paid to pronunciation.
Once you have completed Dutch Intermediate 1, you will find it increasingly easy to converse about everyday topics. You will be able to respond fairly spontaneously, for example in a conversation about the weather, your work or study, and your plans for the future.
After this course you will have little difficulty reading newspaper articles on familiar topics. You will be able to recognise the most important arguments and main conclusions in clearly written texts. You will also be able to read uncomplicated texts about work, study or leisure time.
You will be able to write short texts and emails on familiar topics, for example your new job, or about school or studies. You will be able to write to confirm a hotel booking and write a short response to a blog.
The grammar you learn more about during this course includes:
- irregular verbs
- the structure of main and subordinate clauses
- indirect speech
Certificate
You will complete the course with an oral and written exam.
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained and you will be able to continue to Dutch Intermediate 2.
Course material
The course material is not included in the course price. If you choose to follow lessons in class, you can buy your books through us. You then receive them during the first lesson. If you are going to take an online course, you will buy the books yourself.

What is included in the price of a group course?
The course price includes:
- an intake
- the group course
- an exam
- (if necessary) a resit. You can take the resit within six months after finishing the course.
- a certificate
The course material is not included in the course price.
What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
