The German Beginners course is perfect for you if you want to start learning German from scratch, for example for a holiday, work experience or to study in Germany.
During German Beginners, you will learn how to read and write in German, to speak and to understand spoken German. Grammar and vocabulary are an important part of the course. After this course you will, among other things, be able to:
- tell something about yourself, your work, family and hobbies
- read simple information, for example about a person or a city
- write a simple message to invite someone or to excuse yourself
The course is taught in German and Dutch or English, depending on the languages of the participants.

Course content
Once you have completed the course, you will be able to introduce yourself and tell something about your work, your family and hobbies. You will be able to understand another person talking about these topics if they speak slowly and clearly.
Much of what you learn will be perfect for use during a holiday in Germany. You will be able to:
- read a simple menu and place your order
- buy something in a shop and understand what a product costs
- greet someone, say goodbye to someone, and thank someone
As it is important that you learn the correct pronunciation from the start, attention will be paid to this too. You will learn the proper pronunciation of vowels (the difference between a and ä, o and ö) and consonants, and where the stress lies in words and sentences.
The grammar you learn during this course includes:
- word order in simple main clauses
- verbs in the present tense: weak and strong verbs, “haben” and “sein” (have and are), auxiliary verbs and prefixes
- past tense of “haben” and “sein”: ich hatte (I had), ich war (I was)
- nominative and accusative case ( for some verbs and after "für")
Certificate
You will complete the course with an oral and written exam.
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained and you will be able to continue to German level 2.
Course material
The course material is not included in the course price. If you choose to follow lessons in class, you can buy your books through us. You then receive them during the first lesson. If you are going to take an online course, you will buy the books yourself.

What is included in the price of a group course?
The course price includes:
- an intake
- the group course
- an exam
- (if necessary) a resit. You can take the resit within six months after finishing the course.
- a certificate
The course material is not included in the course price.
What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
