After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.

Course content
During Brazilian level 8, you will improve your Brazilian Portuguese reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. By the end of this course you will be able to talk about something that began in the past and will continue in the future, such as in eu já tinha parado de pagar o seguro quando bati o carro (I had already stopped paying the insurance when I wrote off the car). You will learn how to extract the most important information from a text and summarise it.
You will write in direct and indirect speech using different grammatical constructions. For example: Eu estou cansado porque trabalhei muito hoje (I am tired because I worked hard today) and Ele disse que estava cansado porque tinha trabalhado muito naquele dia (He said that he was tired because he had worked hard that day). You will also learn how to express a suspicion or supposition and how to politely ask for someone's opinion. During the course you will listen to a lot of music and news items, which you will be able to understand easily by the end of the course, and you will read about typical Brazilian topics, such as coffee.
The grammar you learn during this course includes:
- adverbs of time in the present perfect indicative tense, such as in nos últimos meses temos lido vários livros (in the last few months we have read a lot of books)
- turning direct speech into indirect speech, for example from eu vi ontem este filme (I saw this film yesterday) into ela disse que tinha visto aquele filme no dia anterior (she said that she had seen the film the day before)
- verbs with two perfect participles prender, prendido, preso (imprisoned) and matar, matado, morto (killed)

What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
At UvA Talen we have a variety of professional teachers with years of experience teaching to adults. Due to our feedback sessions with teacher we can guarantee the quality of our teachers. We have set standards for the qualification of our teacher. Depending on the type of course, we will often choose for a native speaker of your language.
