Course information
During this course, we will get your Dutch language skills from level A0 to level A2 in twenty lessons.
That level means you will, for example, be able to have a short telephone conversation in Dutch, introduce yourself and your family, and understand menus, brochures and recipes. As well as speaking and reading, Dutch Beginners 1+2 also covers writing skills, including the composition of personal letters and short reviews.
Two other options are offered: either an intensive daytime course lasting four weeks, or a less intensive course taking place in the evening. In the latter case, the course is split up into Dutch Beginners 1 and Dutch Beginners 2.
You will need a minimum level of B1 of the English language in order to follow this course, because some explanations will be given in English.

Course content
During Dutch Beginners 1+2, you will learn Dutch listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Grammar and vocabulary are also an important part of the course.
On completion of this course, you will be able to actively use about 800 to 1,000 words and have passive knowledge of around 2,000 words. You will also be able to apply the basic rules of Dutch grammar, including the present and past tenses, separable verbs and pronouns.
Once you have completed the course, you will find it increasingly easy to engage in everyday conversations, for example about the weather or your holiday. You will be able to ask for directions and understand the answer, provided the other person is speaking slowly and clearly. After this course, you will be able to use er correctly in a sentence, recognise a continuous situation, such as in Ze is in de rivier aan het zwemmen, and ask for help or advice.
You will be able to read and write short, personal messages, for example to make an appointment.
You will learn to read increasingly longer sentences and you will improve your reading skills by looking for information in adverts, brochures and menus.
Of course attention will also be paid to pronunciation, for example of the long and short vowels, and stress, by practicing social conversations in an informal gathering.
The grammar you learn during this course includes:
- correct position of the subject, verb and other clauses and/or verbs in a short sentence
- correct use of inversion
- the difference between the articles de and het.
- distinguishing between the present, perfect and imperfect tenses
- correct use of separable verbs
- referring to words in another sentence using die or dat.
Certificate
You will complete the course with an oral and written exam.
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained and you will be able to continue to Dutch Intermediate 1.
Course material
The course material is not included in the course price. If you choose to follow lessons in class, you can buy your books through us. You then receive them during the first lesson. If you are going to take an online course, you will buy the books yourself.

What is included in the price of a group course?
The course price includes:
- an intake
- the group course
- an exam
- (if necessary) a resit. You can take the resit within six months after finishing the course.
- a certificate
The course material is not included in the course price.
What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.

In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
