Intake
The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation.
After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.
If you have completed the English Upper Intermediate 2 course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.
Course content
Language skills
The course focuses specifically on the skills required for the exam: reading, writing, speaking and listening. After the course, you will read English articles with ease, even if they are about subjects you don’t know much about. You will be able to quickly review texts and recognise their meaning and type. You will learn to write the different types of texts that you may encounter during the exam: a review, article, essay, report, letter and/or email.
After the course, you will be able to speak and listen efficiently in English. You can give your opinion, support it with arguments and have a discussion in which you discuss the arguments of the other party. You will practise these skills through role-playing and listening exercises, among other things.
During the course, you will work continuously on improving your grammar and expanding your vocabulary. These skills are useful in all test areas and are essential for the ‘use of English’ part of the exam.
Exam skills
In addition to the four language skills, the course will also devote attention to general exam skills, including time management, summarising texts and working out what exactly is being asked. You will practise on official Cambridge Assessment English practice tests.
About the exam
The Cambridge B2 First Exam is not included in this course. For that, you must contact the examination office separately.
The Cambridge B2 First Exam is one of Cambridge’s most popular exams, as many companies and universities in non-English speaking countries expect your English to be at least at this level. They will accept the Cambridge B2 First certificate as proof of this. If you want to study in an English-speaking country, B2 is often sufficient for a pre-university or foundation course. Additional information about the exam is available at www.cambridgeenglish.org.

What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
At UvA Talen we have a variety of professional teachers with years of experience teaching to adults. Due to our feedback sessions with teacher we can guarantee the quality of our teachers. We have set standards for the qualification of our teacher. Depending on the type of course, we will often choose for a native speaker of your language.
