Course information

In order to follow the French level 7 course you need to speak French at an intermediate level. You are not always able to find the right word, and you are not completely fluent, but you can converse reasonably smoothly in French. You can also write a short review about a TV programme you have seen.

You will take your language skills to an intermediate degree of proficiency. After this course you will, among other things, be able to: describe in detail what someone looks like, give a presentation for or against an opinion on the climate and read a poem and write one yourself

Course schedule and prices

Intake

The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation.

After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.

If you have completed the French level 6 course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.

Course content

During the French level 7 course, you improve your French reading, writing, speaking and listening skills on the topics of life in the city and the countryside, the human body, love and relationships.

After this course, you will know why French is called the language of love. You will learn how to talk about your relationship and your friendships, and you will learn all about the affectionate use of language, including flirting, seduction, nicknames and expressions of love. Once you have completed French level 7, you will even be able to write a romantic poem or a declaration of love.

You will be find it fairly easy to read articles and editorials on familiar topics in French. You can summarise them, to tell someone something about them, for example, and you can write an open letter about them. You know the correct way to structure a text, with an introduction, your arguments and a conclusion.

The grammar you learn during this course includes:

  • the pronouns le and ça
  • indicating cause (faute de…, dû à…, à force de…) and effect (si bien que…, de façon que…)
  • making passive sentences using être, reflexive verbs (with pronouns me, te, se, etc.) and the combination se faire or se laisser with a verb

Certificate

You will complete the course with an oral and written exam.

If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained and you will be able to continue to French level 8.

What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?

There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.

The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.

It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.

How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?

Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.

Which teacher will teach my group course?

In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.

At UvA Talen we have a variety of professional teachers with years of experience teaching to adults. Due to our feedback sessions with teacher we can guarantee the quality of our teachers. We have set standards for the qualification of our teacher. Depending on the type of course, we will often choose for a native speaker of your language.
