German level 10 is intended for students who already have well-advanced knowledge of German. Students should be familiar with the advanced aspects of German grammar and should have a broad and active vocabulary (work-related and personal life).
During this course, you will increasingly expand your general language skills. The primary aim of this course is to develop your German proficiency, building on your existing knowledge, so that you can express ideas and viewpoints in German with confidence and accuracy, both orally and in writing. After this course you will, among other things, be able to:
- give a short presentation and lead the ensuing discussion
- read literary texts
- understand interviews and radio reports

Intake
The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation.
After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.
If you have completed the German level 9 course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.
Course content
By the end of this course, you will be able to read and understand various types of non-fiction and literary texts and song lyrics. You will also be able to produce a range of texts, for example you can write summaries, commentaries and book reviews and you can read and understand digital forum posts and also write them. You are able to conduct discussions in which you present arguments and refute standpoints and you can define and explain concepts. You are able to interpret and discuss images, photographs and drawings. You know useful expressions for making and discussing proposals in order to reach a consensus. You can also listen actively and ask questions, voice objections and give feedback.
This course builds upon the knowledge gained in German level 9, which is why the goals are in many ways similar. The expansion of the knowledge of the language is mainly in the aspects of writing and grammar.
The grammar you learn during this course includes:
- Review of Infinitivsätze
- Conditions: clause with and without wenn (verbal), prepositional (nominal), participle phrase
- Review of passive forms, including passive sentence constructions and the modal participle with zu
- Auxiliary verbs for allegations and suspicions
- Verbs with prepositions as subordinate clause (da... dass) or an infinitive
- Special conjunctions for writing varied texts
- Modalitätsverben (for example haben zu, sein zu)
Certificate
You will complete the course with an oral and written exam. If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained.
Course material
The course material is not included in the course price. If you choose to follow lessons in class, you can buy your books through us. You then receive them during the first lesson. If you are going to take an online course, you will buy the books yourself.

What is included in the price of a group course?
The course price includes:
- an intake
- the group course
- an exam
- (if necessary) a resit. You can take the resit within six months after finishing the course.
- a certificate
The course material is not included in the course price.
What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
