Course information

Have you completed Italian level 10 at UvA Talen (C1 – Nuovo Espresso 5), and would you like to develop your Italian language skills? Or have you already studied Italian at C1 level in the past? Then Italian Fluency C1 is the right course for you..

Your Italian needs to be at level C1 to participate in this course. You need to have a good understanding of advanced grammar rules and have an extensive vocabulary of the Italian language.

The course focuses on refining your language skills in everyday communication and in more formal contexts. You will practice conversations using idiomatic expressions and regional variations, and learn to express complex ideas with greater accuracy and confidence. The aim is to enhance your fluency and become more comfortable using sophisticated structures and vocabulary in all situations.

Course schedule and prices

Intake

The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation.

After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.

If you have completed the Italian level 10 course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.

Course content

In this course, you will further refine your Italian language skills with a strong focus on speaking, while also improving your writing, reading and listening skills. At the same time, you will deepen your understanding of the Italian culture, history and contemporary society.

Grammar will be revised and practiced throughout the course, but it will not be the main focus. The following topics will be covered to strengthen and expand your grammatical knowledge:

  • Revision of C1-level and earlier grammar structures to consolidate and refine your use of complex forms. For example, combining different past tenses with the subjunctive when telling or writing a story (concordanza dei tempi al congiuntivo).
  • The use of conditional and hypothetical forms (periodo ipotetico della realtà, della possibilità e dell’irrealità).
  • The correct use of prepositions, adjectives and adverbs.

This course programme can be of great interest to students who want to keep practicing the language. It may also benefit students who intend on moving to Italy: for pleasure, work or for studying at a university level.

By the end of the course, you will be able to read and understand a wide range of contemporary Italian texts, such as literary works, news articles, poems, historical texts and essays. You will be able to write about more complex ideas with greater precision and coherence, improving your descriptive and narrative skills through a stronger command of text cohesion, verb tenses and the use of adjectives. You will also gain confidence in speaking about emotions, literature, culture, art history and current events, learning to express opinions and to narrate past experiences more naturally. Throughout the course, you will enrich your vocabulary and become more familiar with idiomatic and colloquial expressions.

What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?

There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.

The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.

It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.

How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?

Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.

Which teacher will teach my group course?

In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.

At UvA Talen we have a variety of professional teachers with years of experience teaching to adults. Due to our feedback sessions with teacher we can guarantee the quality of our teachers. We have set standards for the qualification of our teacher. Depending on the type of course, we will often choose for a native speaker of your language.
