Course information
The Russian level 4 course is right for you if you have already mastered the basics of Russian and you have a basic vocabulary, you can understand long sentences that contain mainly familiar and international words and you know the particular use of reflexive verbs.
In the Russian level 4 course, you will expand your basic Russian skills. After this course you will, among other things, be able to:
- distinguish specific information while listening, even without the help of text or pictures
- answer written questions about yourself
- tell what you do and do not like
The course is taught in Russian and Dutch or English, depending on the languages of the participants.
Course schedule and prices
Intake
The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation and level test.
After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.
If you have completed the Russian level 3 course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.
Course content
During Russian level 4, you will improve your Russian reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Grammar and vocabulary are an important part of the course.
After this course you will be able to conduct a conversation with a doctor, tell your symptoms and describe how you feel. You will also be able to give someone advice, recommend something or forbid it. Besides this, you will be able to conduct a simple conversation about dreams, holiday plans and your interests. You will be able to understand essential information in simple texts containing mainly familiar and international words, and write short stories and essays based on photos, maps, diagrams and pictures, and make up and write down an end to an unfinished story.
The grammar you learn during this course includes:
- forming nouns, personal pronouns and adjectives in the dative and instrumental cases, in singular and plural
- the imperative
- the meaning of the prefixes used in verbs of motion (по-, в-, вы-, при-, у-, пере-, за-)
Certificate
You will complete the course with an oral and written exam.
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained and you will be able to continue to Russian level 5.
Course material
The course material is not included in the course price. If you choose to follow lessons in class, you can buy your books through us. You then receive them during the first lesson. If you are going to take an online course, you will buy the books yourself.

What is included in the price of a group course?
The course price includes:
- an intake
- the group course
- an exam
- (if necessary) a resit. You can take the resit within six months after finishing the course.
- a certificate
The course material is not included in the course price.
What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
