Course information
The Swedish level 2 course is right for you if you have already mastered the basics of Swedish. For example, you can read an advertisement, explain what you like and make comparisons, such as jag är större än min bror (I am bigger than my brother).
In the Swedish level 2 course, you will improve your basic Swedish skills. After this course you will, among other things, be able to:
- fill in a booking form for a holiday
- understand the directions in a satnav system
- read and write short, personal messages and emails
The course is taught in Swedish and Dutch or English, depending on the languages of the participants.
Course schedule and prices
Intake
The intake procedure for this course consists of: online intake conversation.
After you have enrolled for this course, we will invite you for an assessment to determine your level. We recommend that you enrol at least two weeks before the start of the course. If you enrol later than this, we cannot guarantee there will be time for the intake procedure.
If you have completed the Swedish Beginners course at UvA Talen, an assessment will not be necessary.
Course content
During Swedish level 2, you will improve your Swedish reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Grammar and vocabulary are also an important part of the course.
Once you have completed the course, you will find it increasingly easy to engage in simple conversations, for example in the supermarket, at the baker’s or in a café. You will be able to ask for directions and understand the answer, provided the other person is speaking slowly and clearly. You will be able to use your smartphone or computer in Swedish and understand common terms in computer menus, such as lösenord (password), skriv ut (print), sätta på (switch on), ångra (undo) and öppna (open).
You will be able to read and write short, personal messages and emails, for example to make an appointment.
You will learn to read increasingly long sentences, mainly in lists, but also in running texts. During the course, you will improve your reading proficiency by reading short articles on Swedish life, for example about föräldralediga pappor, the many Swedish fathers who can be seen pushing prams and strollers during the day.
And of course attention will be paid to pronunciation; you will learn the ng sound, where the accent lies in separable verbs and the stress in sentences and words.
The grammar you learn during this course includes:
- the use of indirect speech hon frågar vilken tid vi kommer (she asks what time we will be coming)
- ordinal numbers and numbers in sentences, such as a specific date (28-8, den tjugosjunde augusti) and the number of a bus (the 82, åttiotvåan)
- adverbs of time, position and destination, such as ifjol and förra året (last year), hemma (home) and hem (going home)
Certificate
You will complete the course with an oral and written exam.
If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate showing the level you have attained and you will be able to continue to Swedish level 3.
Course material
The course material is not included in the course price. If you choose to follow lessons in class, you can buy your books through us. You then receive them during the first lesson. If you are going to take an online course, you will buy the books yourself.

What is included in the price of a group course?
The course price includes:
- an intake
- the group course
- an exam
- (if necessary) a resit. You can take the resit within six months after finishing the course.
- a certificate
The course material is not included in the course price.
What is the difference between an online and in class course? Can I combine an online and in class course?
There is no difference in the course content and course material between the online and in class course, only a difference in format. The online courses take place via Zoom and the in class courses at the Roeterseiland in Amsterdam. By using breakout-rooms teachers will aim to provide the same interaction as during an in class course. In both formats students are expected to actively participate in the course.
The choice for an online or in class course depends on your personal preference for location and teaching style.
It is not possible to combine an online and in class course. If you start a course online, you will follow the entire course online. The same applies to in class courses. This is in order to ensure the peace in our classes and avoid a lot of changes between classes.
How much time should I expect to spend on studying by myself?
Students generally need to spend double the amount of time of the course on studying by themselves. This means that if your course is 40 hours of class, you can expect about 80 hours of homework and self study. In our experience, the more time you invest in homework, the more you benefit from your course.
Which teacher will teach my group course?
In the week before the start of the course you will receive your final course confirmation which mentions your teacher.
